I am Smith

Being part of the Five College consortium is a huge plus for me because it means I can choose classes from all five campuses (Smith, Amherst, Hampshire and Mount Holyoke colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst) and put together a course of study specifically tailored to my interests. Irish music has always been a passion, and the Five College ethnomusicology certificate lets me combine classes in Irish culture, folklore and history as well as music. As a first year, I sang with the Smith College Chorus, but this year I’m singing with the Amherst College Concert Choir because I like the depth that the male voices add (another benefit of the consortium). After graduate school I plan to be a choral conductor and composer, so I am taking a conducting class as well as voice lessons.

Ultimate Frisbee is the perfect antidote to academic work. We practice three or four times a week with tournaments on weekends. It’s great to run around, de-stress and let off steam with a wonderful group of people.

There are so many resources at Smith. The Office for International Study is a fantastic resource that matches students’ interests with study abroad opportunities. I will be studying at the National University of Ireland, Galway, in spring 2016, and then I plan to use my Praxis funding for a summer music internship in London.

I’m continually surprised at how much Smith professors challenge us to form our own opinions and debate and defend them, all in a safe, comfortable environment surrounded by empowered, motivated women. It encourages me to think independently and be confident. Every girl should have this experience.
